Speaker 1:

Hey, hey, hot Tubbers, Welcome to the podcast tub talk with the Hot Tub Lady. I am your host, jackie Johnson. Let me turn that down so you guys can hear me. And oh cool, i'm super excited. I am watching the Nasdaq Times Square, my book Hot Tub Clarity, as you guys can see here on the phone And I'll post some videos of it. But I won an award and it's just getting showing that in New York right now. So they just showed that on the New York Times Square for my book Hot Tub Clarity. So, yay, super excited about that. Anyway, but that's not what we're here for today.

Speaker 1:

Today we are going to talk about should I replace or repair my hot tub? And that is a question that I get on the sales floor quite a bit. You know a lot of people. Hot tubs have been around for quite a while now. I've been in the industry since, technically since 87. And I used to help my my ex husband at the time and we would go to shows and let go to the Nebraska State Fair and people would come up to us and say that's an awful big bathtub. I don't think it would fit in my bathroom. That's how far and how long ago I've been in the hot tub industry, but there's hot tubs that are out there that are that old And there's hot tubs that are not that old, that need to be repaired, and the question is is, should I repair or should I replace my hot tub? So if you guys have any questions at all, please jump on and I'll be happy to answer those. But we're definitely here and we're going to do that today. But so we're just going to start with the first question And that is how long should a hot tub last?

Speaker 1:

And that's a great question, and it all really depends on how long your hot tub lasts. It depends on how quality of a hot tub that you bought. So there are hot tubs out there that should, on average, every hot tub should last 10 to 15 years. Now there are some, some of the lesser quality or the less expensive hot tubs that you might get five to 10 years out of those, but most of them should last 10 to 15 years. Now, if you do a really high quality one, something with a circulation pump, for example, the hot springs, the calderas, jacuzzi, sundance, those are all really good quality hot tubs with those circulation pumps. They're what is considered a premium hot tub And you will get 20 years out of that, if not more longer. I mean, we just the other day we had a hot springs come in that was from 1989.

Speaker 1:

Now, in a particular case like that, if you have a hot tub from 1989, it is time to let it go. It just let's not even think about it anymore. It's just time to let it go. But there is, that is something that you just need to need to weigh out. I always compare it to an old car I used to have. I loved it, it was a great car, but every single month I was going into the shop and I was putting $500 into it and I kept telling people but I don't have a payment. So I thought I was doing great that way. But once I got the, once I replaced the car and did have a payment, but it was only $300 a month I actually had more money because my car was staying running and I had peace of mind and it was worth all of that. So the same is kind of true with your hot tub.

Speaker 1:

Hot tubs are a big investment and they do wear out. I mean their water, their pumps, they're moving and water chemistry plays a huge factor on that? In fact, i think that's my next point. Yet Does regular maintenance affect the life of a hot tub? It is the number one thing that affects the life of the hot tub.

Speaker 1:

If you're not keeping your pH and alkalinity in line, you are going to destroy your hot tub, and it'll if it's too high. So if your pH and your alkalinity is too high, you're going to get scale and that causes that scale loves to collect on heaters, heaters and pumps in anywhere where it's metal. They love to collect it there and it'll just it scales up and then it ruins your heater. If it's too low, the water becomes acidic and then at that point it's just eaten through everything. It's eaten through the pumps, the motors, it's eaten through the jets, it's eaten through the shell and your water is crystal clear and it looks amazing. But it is really hard on the hot tub and too low is actually worse than too high. You really want to have your pH at 7.6 and your alkalinity between 80 and 20. You can go as low as 40 on your alkalinity, but you really do need to have it at least there. That's where you kind of need to have it. So kind of keep that in mind and then And then after that, the next question I have is does regular?

Speaker 1:

okay that we already did that one when should I replace a hot tub? So the big thing that you're going to have to ask yourself on when you should replace a hot tub is A how much is the repair going to cost? There are certain repairs out there that are pretty simple and they aren't too expensive. You know something like, obviously, just replacing a filter not a big deal, it's regular maintenance. It's something that you're going to have to do quite a bit If it's. You know, something like a flow switch which will shut your heater down.

Speaker 1:

Flow switches do cause a lot of issues and they do cause they can shut your heaters down and can shut the spa pack down. But if you just replace the flow switch versus replacing the entire spa pack, that's usually a pretty affordable repair. Usually, i mean, the part itself is like 40 bucks and then you have labor on top of that. So just kind of depending on where you live, you do have the cost of the labor, and sometimes the labor is. You know, it depends on where you are. I've heard anywhere from 110 all the way up to 450, for an hour is worth the labor. So it just that kind of depends on where you are and how the labor market is in your part of the world. That's just something to keep in mind. And but a lot of those parts, pieces and parts aren't that expensive. Flow switches aren't bad and replacing jets aren't bad. Doing a pump seal isn't bad If you just have a small leak in the in the equipment compartment.

Speaker 1:

A lot of times it's just a pump seal And if you catch it early enough that's not a big deal. But if you don't catch that pump seal leak early enough and you have to actually replace the whole pump, then that gets to be really expensive. Pumps are anywhere from 500 to $1,200 and you want to make sure that you you catch that really early. Now you got to find certain dealers and certain service people won't replace a pump seal depending on the age of the hot tub And all that all goes back to the how old the hot tub is and what the water chemistry is. And when you replace a pump seal you have to take the pump apart, you pull the impeller off and if your water is really hard and your pH and alkalinity are really high, high, you're going to break that impeller every single time And it's not an expensive place piece to replace but it's just it's a lot of work. And then the labor of changing that pump seal went from a half hour job all the way to a sometimes a two hour job to do that. So there's a lot of service people out there that won't replace that. But sometimes you can rebuild them, rebuild the pumps, and that is, you know, usually half the cost of replacing the pump.

Speaker 1:

But again, you got to weigh it out. If the hot tub pump is 10, 15 years old it's probably just time to get a new pump, or maybe it's even time to just get a new hot tub. So you just got to kind of weigh out your options. There are some repairs out there. Especially if a hot tub is leaking and it's fully insulated, those repairs can get really expensive. They have a 40, 50 hour repair time. You know 40, 50 hours of labor involved in those And they're pretty rare when they happen. But when they do happen it's kind of an expensive repair. I mean I've seen. You know, typically that starts at about $2,000. And if you have a 15 year old hot tub with five jets and a light, it's probably not worth fixing it. If it's a two year old hot tub and you paid $20,000 for it, yes, 100%, you need to fix it. So it's. You just got to kind of get your repairs and kind of figure out, just weigh out the costs. So there are some differences and you definitely want to check that out.

Speaker 1:

Another thing is how much warranty is left on the hot tub And a hot tub. Warranties are all over the board and I'm probably getting ahead of myself here a little bit, but hot tub warranties are anywhere from one year on the equipment. If you buy a used one, sometimes those are only like 30 days. Or you can go. Some hot tubs have up to five years on the equipment and 10 years against on the shell and seven years against leaks. So check your warranty before you you're totally like oh, i just got to throw this away, and hot tubs are worth something.

Speaker 1:

Running a hot tub is always worth something. So keep that in mind as well. Even if you're like I'm done, i'm not spending any more money, you know, if you're done you're even like if you're saying I'm done, i'm not going to spend any more money on this hot tub, if you fix it, it's still worth something. People loved to buy used hot tubs. We sell a ton of used hot tubs And whether you're trading it in or you're just trying to sell it on Facebook marketplace or something like that, it's out there and it's available to do So. I do recommend fixing your hot tub, and sometimes some dealers will actually just let you trade it in for the repair itself. Sometimes they'll give you a few extra dollars after that. Again, it's just what that hot tub is worth.

Speaker 1:

I would say anything under 5 years 100%. Anything under 5 years 100%. Replace that. Anything under 10 years you're about a 70% repair it. Once you get up to 15 years, you're probably about it up 50% We need to repair it versus replacing it. And then, if you get over 15 years, you're probably more around that 20, 25% Let's repair it versus replacing it.

Speaker 1:

But hot tubs, again, are worth a lot And if you're a handy person and you can fix hot tubs, you can. You can do really well with that, because a lot of these repairs aren't overly hard but they do take a little bit of skill And in today's world skill is getting less and less. So that's just something that we want to keep in mind and we have to. We need to pay the people who do do have the abilities to do things. We have to pay them very well. So let's go, okay.

Speaker 1:

So I did say I was getting a little ahead of myself. Here is a new warranty and a piece of mine worth it. So that's a question that you really need to ask yourself on your hot tub, when you're looking at the repair And the service manager calls you back and says, hey, this is going to cost you $700 to replace this or to repair this. Is that something that's going to happen again? That's a question that you should ask. Is it something that that is going to fix the problem Or is it something that I'm going to have to deal with again in a few years?

Speaker 1:

Leaks are one of the biggest ones that once a hot tub leaks, it usually leaks again. So kind of keep that in mind. And if you're just looking at, let's say, a pump seal, i don't really count that as a leak. I count that as an equipment failure or a pump or a circulation pump or something like that. Usually you replace that once and you're good to go. And control panels are usually a one time thing but they are very expensive repair And if you're only at five to seven years, yeah, you definitely want to replace that or replace that control panel, not replace the whole hot tub.

Speaker 1:

But and then that hot tub is actually going to be worth more and when it comes time to selling it, because that is One of the components that is an expensive repair to to fix. So but you just have to ask yourself is You know, are you the type of person that just doesn't want to think about it? And that's what I have found for myself and in automobiles. I just need to have a newer vehicle that I don't have to think about, because I do put on a lot of miles And I just don't want to think about it. So if the peace of mind and knowing I'm getting in that car and I'm gonna get to wherever I need to go, get safely, is worth a Lot, and the same thing is true for me and hot tubs Knowing that it's gonna get through the winter without breaking down, that's a big deal for me. So those are things that I should, that I keep in mind. When should I repair? you should repair when the cost is lower than The cost of the actual hot tub being worth and if you ever have a question, just call your local hot tub dealer or you can guys can shoot me a message on Instagram And I'll be happy to answer you out, or on our Facebook group.

Speaker 1:

Join the Facebook group hot tub clarity. That's a really good place to get a hold of me And there's a lot of experts on there that will help you out on that as well. But if you're, if you're concerned on whether you should repair or replace, always just ask I mean ask your, your, your service tech Would you replace us? if this was yours, would you actually replace this part? or would you get a new hot tub and you'd be surprised what you can get for especially Brands that that dealers sell. You'd be surprised what they would give you in trade. So always keep that in the back of your mind that you can actually get it in trade on that Whoops, we just did that one Parts availability.

Speaker 1:

This is another reason to decide whether you should should Reply repair or replace your hot tub. It's probably gonna make the decision for you. So what can? so what can's? wellness the manufacturer there. They have a 20 year parts availability guarantee on all of their hot tubs that they sell. So again. That's the hot springs, the caldera, the free flows, the fantasies, lime lights, tiger rivers which tiger rivers are now 20 years out? But anything like that. They actually guarantee that they are going to get you apart For that hot tub, that will keep that hot tub running for 20 years, are gonna have the availability of that, and that's a big deal and Can make all the difference in the world.

Speaker 1:

And in the last five or six years, especially with the COVID and the shortage of the hot tubs that were out there, there was a lot of manufacturers that were grabbing whatever part that they could get a hold of to get the hot tub out the door. And Now it's three or four years later and and we get pieces that are failing and we can't get the part to replace it. So That's a big deal and so that's something to definitely figure out and like. If somebody will call us with an off-brand and when I say off-brand it'll be a brand that we don't normally sell and For us, tracking down the part is such a time consumer that we actually We actually just pass on them because we we have so much work to do that we can't keep up with With taking care of our customers. So we really just kind of service what we sell.

Speaker 1:

So that's another thing to keep in mind is if you're out there shopping and you see something on on the website, you know Way farer Costco or something and they have this $3,000 hot tub that seems like a good idea. But then you get at home and eight months later the heater stops working. You may not be able to find a heater for it. So that's That's a really big thing when it comes to replacing your repairing your hot tub Is if the parts are going to be available. And if the parts are available this time, are they going to be available next time as well? So that's something to definitely keep in mind. Check that out when you're doing your original shopping and then, if something does go out, you can always do a quick Google search to see if you can find the part. I mean Google done so much for us.

Speaker 1:

But then there's the ability of actually getting that part installed. A lot of, a lot of places won't do it unless They sell you the part some places, well, it's just, you know, you just have to call around, do some homework on that. But kind of keep that in mind. If it's, you know, you got a 13 year old Artesian in the heater went out the heaters probably an easy one, because you can get just heater elements for most things. But let's say your control board went out. You may not be able to find that control board and if you do, it could be very, very expensive because it's somebody knows what they have. So keep that in mind. That's. That's a bigger deal. Bigger deal for sure. So Well, got ahead of myself, just get rid of all those.

Speaker 1:

So top five signs that you need a new hot tub. So this These are just some things that I know from all my years of selling a quick Google search, the thing, everything out there that These are just some things to keep in mind that you should actually just replace it and not repair it. Number one it's old. if your hot tub again is over 15 years, It's probably time just just to bite the bullet and get a new one, and you can always. You don't always have to get a brand new hot tub. There's a time you need to get a new hot tub. There's a ton of used hot tubs out there or refurbished hot tubs out there that are really worth checking out. Now, again on the used hot tubs. I would always suggest On a used hot tub, i always suggest that you see that hot tub running, you see it hot and you make sure that there are no leaks.

Speaker 1:

If you're buying that from a Private owner, i always will suggest that that's how you see it. If you're buying it from a dealer, just make sure that you have a warranty that comes along with that, because dealers have to stand behind what Dealers have to stand behind their work. I So that's something that I would definitely recommend. If you're going to buy a used one. But you don't always have to buy a brand new hot tub to replace your hot tub, and when you have a hot tub to trade in, you may be really, really surprised what that hot tub is actually worse. So I'd always ask what you could get on trade on it. Now, as a salesperson who's been selling for decades, i can also tell you that no hot tub comes in on trade, that there isn't something wrong with it. Everybody trades in a perfectly working hot tub. But as a dealer or someone with a service department, we can fix that and repair that and get that going. So that's but that's the number one sign if you need to replace your hot tub.

Speaker 1:

Again, i'd say the 15 year mark is definitely when you really need to start not investing money into repairs and start looking at new ones. Again, that does depend on the quality of the hot tub and what it is. If it's only got one pump, it might be closer to eight, 10 years, but or the one 10s, they seem to go through their pumps just a little bit faster. So another reason why you might need to replace your hot tub is it always needs repairs. It's just like you fix one thing and then the next six weeks there's another thing that goes out, or you fix this leak and now it's leaking someplace else. And everybody does their best, but you, you can only do what you can only do And especially if your hot tub's ever been frozen, that would be a good time to consider replacing your hot tub, cause, once again, once something leaks or it's, it's usually usually a bad deal.

Speaker 1:

Another thing, another if you're always needing repairs, sometimes that is due to water chemistry And so like if you start replacing your jets and like you pull your jets out and they just crumble in your hand when, when you pull it out and that's why it fell out And then you start replacing one jet, which a jet is super cheap to repair. But you replace that jet and then you have to replace the next jet. But if all that damage is on the jets, what is the damage on the plumbing on the inside of the hot tub? So if it's disintegrating the jets, it's also disintegrating the plumbing and it's disintegrating the pumps and the seals and the heaters and all of that. So it's just a matter of time as things. It just it's a matter of time before the next thing's going to go wrong.

Speaker 1:

So if you're constantly making repairs, it's probably time to consider replacing your hot tub. The repairs that you do do don't hold. So let's say you, for example, i've had, i had a customer one time that we replaced their pump like in three years we replaced four pumps Then it's time to consider putting a new hot tub in there. There was, there was an issue, there was a glitch in the hot tub and we actually the manufacturer stepped up and replaced that for the customer. But there's, if you've got a situation like that, that you're having to keep redoing this exact, you're having to keep redoing the exact same repair over and over again.

Speaker 1:

That is probably a good time to consider replacing your hot tub. The your utility costs keep going up, that's a good time to to maybe get your hot tub checked out. And that's going to kind of go back to the scale buildup on the hot tub. You know, if you've got a lot of scale and your heater heater has to work really hard to break through that scale to get the the heater to go Again, that's going to kind of go back to water chemistry a little bit. But or if your pumps aren't running as efficiently as they were and you're just noticing that your utility bills are going up and I'm not just talking about the raising prices of utilities, but if utilities in general just keep going up, then it's probably time to consider replacing your hot tub. But it's because it's usually just kind of worked out. You know, it's just used up, it's leaking. That is that would probably be my number one reason to tell someone that hey, maybe we just need to consider trading that in A leaking hot tub, especially a full foam hot tub, can can they usually start around that $2,000 mark.

Speaker 1:

And the reason for that is because you're those that plumbing is completely wrapped in insulation and water is going to find the path of least resistance And so it's going to come out of the hot tub. So it may be back here in this corner over here, but it may find its way to outside of the hot tub, clear up front, by the corner, by the equipment area, and so if your hot tub is leaking in the back, you have to dig out, literally chisel out all that foam and go back to find that leak and dig it out, and that may be the leak and that may not be the leak. And, like I said earlier, if you, if, if you have one leak, you usually have several leaks. So just kind of keep that in mind And then it might be time just to replace the hot tub. And again you'd be surprised what your hot tub would be worth. In trade They usually do really well.

Speaker 1:

So typical signs that your hot tub is getting old I mean, we kind of just talked about that with the five, five reasons or five things that you need to know that it's time to replace your hot tub. Cover age is another one that's something also to consider when you're considering replacing your hot tub is covers. Get old covers, show their show, the age of the hot tub faster and anything. Most covers need to be replaced every four to seven years and they just get waterlogged and that's just kind of part of how it goes. And as those covers get waterlogged then you have to replace them. So if you have to do a repair on your hot tub, let's say you've got to do an $800 pump pump replacement and your hot tubs eight years old and you have to do an $800 pump replacement but you have never replaced the cover on your hot tub. It's now also time to replace the cover on your hot tub and that's about $600. So now you got about $1400 that you're going to be putting into your hot tub And in most cases you could probably sell that for quite a bit more than the 1400.

Speaker 1:

And I know you can trade it in, just depending on the age of your hot tub at eight years. So you for sure could be able to probably get, you know, 15 to 4000, maybe even $8000, just depending on what hot tub it is in trade. So that might be something to maybe consider. I mean it's. There's other things, there's routine maintenance that has to happen with the hot tub. So maybe If you start and have to put repairs in it, it just might be time to replace. But it's also your hot. It's also that eight year old hot tub. With that 14, $1400 investment at that particular moment you could get 20, 25 years out of it. So it's again. It's just something that you personally have to weigh out. So just kind of give it some thought and kind of go that way.

Speaker 1:

Control panel issues Other than a leak, that's probably one of the most expensive repairs that's out there. Control panel issues I mean they're just their little computers and they deal with water and there's. That's just one of the things that you're going to have to replace And the cost on them can get pretty expensive and the availability to find them is also also a little bit of a challenge, especially as the hot tub start aging, because you know they are little computer chips that are inside those control panels, just like everything with the cars and what's going on there. They're getting harder and harder to get those chips And the manufacturers in general have just stopped supporting those older hot tubs and just started making newer ones. Especially during COVID, when you couldn't get a hot tub, they literally just didn't focus on the old product that was out there. They focused on the new product that was out there, with the exception of a few. Like I said, watkins has got their 20 year parts guarantee, but it's it's definitely out there and it's one of those things that you want to definitely consider as, as you're thinking about it, cause control boards.

Speaker 1:

If, if, if you didn't buy a high quality hot tub and your control board goes out, that would probably be another one of those red flags where I'd be like, yeah, it's time to time to just do something, something else. And you know, if you're looking at like an inflatable or something like that, i wouldn't spend any money on an inflatable hot tub, i would just just replace it And they're designed to be that way. That's their price when you originally buy them, to just replace them or replace them upfront. If you're looking at a hot tub in the entry level, you know those three to $5,000 hot tubs three to $8,000 hot tubs those I would say you know anything over seven, i would definitely probably just start replacing, but I would repair up to that point. And you again, you can get 10, 15 years out of them. So you're about half life.

Speaker 1:

If it's about seven years or more, if you're getting into the, the value line, those, those are usually going to last you quite a bit longer. They're going to be a 15 year hot tub for sure. So I would say I would definitely wouldn't really consider replacing until you know seven, 10 years, something like that. And then if you get up into the luxury and premium lines of hot tubs, then you're doing you know those are your 20 year hot tubs And that's that's when I would probably go quite a ways.

Speaker 1:

And again, you just got to, you got to weigh it out and trust your, trust your dealer or trust your repair person. They're not out there just to make money, but they they are out there to do what's best for you And it's. It's kind of sad sometimes to see someone put in three, four thousand dollars in repairs in their hot tub when you know that that hot tub isn't going to last another five years. So that's it's. And you try. You try to tell people what they should do. But again, if you ever have any questions, just reach out to me on what you've currently got going on in your hot tub and how old it is, what the I can definitely give you my opinion. I also have my consultation phone calls that you can do and I can give you my opinion on whether you should repair or replace.

Speaker 1:

But for the most part, you know, hot tubs are designed to be repaired. They definitely are They. You can definitely repair them, you can keep them going. But there is a point when you just need to look at them and say repair, replace, maybe I should get a new one. And then everybody knows, once you have a hot tub, you can't live without one. So there, there's that side of the issue too. So I know my hot tub is amazing and there is no way that I would not have my hot tub. But anyway, so that's those are my thoughts on repair and replace. If anybody has any questions, please let me know. Let's see what else I've got on here. I talked about easy fix repairs, you know. So these are things that I would definitely repair.

Speaker 1:

On just replacing jets, you know, again, unless they're corroded or or kind of destroyed, i would just replace them. They're destroyed, i would just replace. Replace jets that you know they're 20, $20, $40 a piece. Again, that adds up if you've bought in a house and the hot tub has been sitting empty for a while and all the jets need to be replaced, that can easily add up to a thousand dollars. But just so you're aware on that, pumps, you know those are going to be $500 to a thousand dollars. Control panels are going to be $600 to $2,000.

Speaker 1:

You know things you can do. You can replace heating elements versus replacing the whole heater. You can replace the flow switch versus replacing the whole spa pack. You can always, like I said, you can always do a trade in. You can always just try to sell it outright. A working hot tub is always worth more than one. That is not whether you're trying to sell it or whether you're trying to trade it in. So just kind of keep that in mind as well. It's, you know, it's like like a car. If you drag it into the dealer it's not worth nearly as much as if it's driving and you can move it around. So but those are the things that kind of got going on today.
