Hey, hey Hot tubers. You are listening to the podcast Tub Talk with the Hot Tub lady, and I am your host Jackie Johnson, and I am super excited to be with you guys today. We are going to talk about biofilm and purging your hot tub today. That is going to be our number one topic, just because it's been like a really, really big, hot word in the, in the hot tub industry for, for a little while now. And one of the, one of the things that. Well, I just did mine yesterday. If you got, if you caught me on Instagram, I started it on Saturday. I finished it on Sunday, but I did, did do a hot tub purge on my hot tub on Saturday. And I like to do it in the spring and really once a year is enough to do it. But basically what happens is the hot tub gets a buildup. It gets a buildup of, of all kinds of icky stuff. And what you wanna do is you have to clean out the lines and you clean out the plumbing, and you clean out the hot tub itself and. Sometimes just draining it and doing that isn't, doesn't do enough for it when, when you just, just drain it out. So you wanna actually like, strip those lines and, and strip the stuff that, that's causing the problems. And what, what happens a lot of times with that biofilm is it will actually. Like start consuming your, your chlorine, make it really hard to keep a chlorine level and those type of things. And that actually r really can make you spend more money on the hot tub because you're using more chlorine or your salt system doesn't work as well. And these are just some things that you need to do to just once a year is, is plenty on that. But lemme grab a drink of water here and we're gonna get right into the outline. So how is everybody? It's been it's been a really good weekend. The weather around here has just been absolutely amazing and. I, I, I couldn't, it's, you couldn't ask for better hot tubing weather. So it's been, it's been pretty awesome. But let's get into purging and why we do it and what's, what's it, it's important about. And my, my first question is how did purging begin? So, I've been in the industry a really long time. Long, longer than I'd like to admit sometimes, but we never used to purge the hot tubs. We would just drain 'em every three or four months and call it good. But once. There was a company that came out and I don't know if they were the first, they probably weren't, but they were the first company that introduced it to me and, or at least the one that I felt worked really good. There was, there was a few more purge products out there bef before this product, but it was silk Balance, who is a water conditioning company. So they, they sell a product called Silk Balance and it conditions your water, but they also toge. To make that work properly, you had to get the lines cleaned out and do what they needed to do. Well, they had a product called Clean Start, and the first time I used that, it was just this little eight ounce bottle. And the first time I used it, my hot tub was maybe six months old, might've been eight months old. I didn't have it very long, and I poured this in and it cleaned out the lines and the ick and the gross that came out of those lines. I was just, it was disgusting. I mean, it was, I was just like, oh my God, that's in my hot tub. It was so bad and it cleaned it out really good, and it did a really good job. Now, the one thing I didn't like about that product was. It would stick, whatever it pulled off of the lines, it would stick to the side of the hot tub. And you really, really had the scrub to get that off of there. And I mean, it really became a, a big chore to get the. To get that hot tub clean because all that stuff that was in the, in your lines was now stuck to the, to the wall, the hot tub. And there were some tricks we learned along the way. We actually learned to save a little bit of the hot or the clean start. It sta save a little bit of the bottle and actually put that on a towel and then wipe that all off afterwards and then kind of bale it as you were draining it. We would actually like scoop all the scum and just, just throw it out as you did that. So that helps. But that, that's how I got started into hot tub purging. And that was probably 10 years ago at this point. Yeah, I bet it was 10 years ago at this point. So that's around the time that purging became popular. And there's so many companies out there. There's a ton of companies out there that are actually selling hot tub purge now. It's a very popular product and it's, it's something that you can You can get almost anywhere. I've got quite a few links down below for, for Amazon and a couple other places, and, and I'll go over all, over all my favorite purges here in a minute. But it is there, there's a lot of them out there. And if you do it once a year, you're gonna be. You'll be doing pretty good. Which actually brings me into the, to the next question is, how often do you purge a hot tub? Well, you wanna purge a hot tub once a year is plenty. I find myself doing it more than, more than once a year. Cause a lot of people will ask me to test their purges and I did just test a new one. This weekend, and I'm gonna do hopefully I'll have that video up on Sunday about the one that I just tested this weekend. It's the new hot tub scrub, but I'm constantly getting people sending me purges. So typically twice a year I'll, I'll do mine because I'm just trying some different ones, but, Once a year is plenty. You don't wanna do it every single time you drain your hot tub. And if you talk to a hot tub dealer, you talk to somebody who sells the product, they're gonna tell you that you need to do it every single time. But that's, that's a bit much really, once a year is enough to enough to do that. So I, I hope that makes sense. But But the thing that you need to do when you drain or when you purge a hot tub, and this is what the mistake a lot of first timers make, is you want to use the old water that's in the hot tub. You actually want to, to. Take the filters out. There was one product there for a little bit that you could actually keep the filters in there and throw'em into the, the footwell of the hot tub and clean 'em that way. That is no longer available and that's not something that you're gonna do anymore, but you're gonna take the filters completely out of the hot tub and. Then you're gonna pour the, the purge. Whatever brand you're using, you're the purge or the flush, you're gonna pour that into the hot tub and then you're gonna let it run for a half hour, 45 minutes. Read the instructions on the bottle cuz they're all a little different. Some will tell you to use the whole bottle, some will tell you to use half the bottle. Just, just kind of read the, whatever one you decide to do. Some of them are just a little tiny amount, and they're only like two ounces. Some of them are like 16 ounces and they take the whole thing. Some of them will foam, some of them do not. So it just kind of depends on what you're doing. But you're gonna take that purge, you're gonna pour it into the hot tub with the old water and the, the old water and the filters out. You're gonna let that run and then we're gonna drain the hot tub. So that's. How you kind of do that. But a lot of people will drain the hot tub and then think they have to purge it, which you can do, but it's, you're just wasting the water and wasting your time. And then technically you're supposed to, once the hot tub has been drained and you rinse it out really good, you're technically supposed to fill it back up with water again and drain that out and just let that run for five, 10 minutes just to flush everything out again. I'm gonna be honest with you, that's not nothing I have. I've done that one time I thought, I think, but every other time I just. Fill it back up and go, but the proper instructions are to actually fill it back up and drain it again, and then go from there. But you do wanna use your old water when you do that. So it's always a good idea to have a bottle of urge around the house because whatever day you get the urge to, to drain clean and refill your hot tub, that'll be the day that you use the purge. And you just wanna make sure that the purge is already in, in the house. And because it never fails if you, if you have to go out and get the bottle of purge. You're just not gonna, you're, you're just not gonna do it. So that's kind of how that does that. My next question, that is, what is biofilm? So the whole purpose of getting rid of biofilm is why we purged to begin with, but let me bring up a screen share here in, what is B biofilm? Let me take that down. So biofilm. Is basically, biofilms is sometime referred to as spa bacteria. It's the slime layer that forms on the surfaces of the water pipes, hot tub and other water contacting environments. Biofilm is accumulated and can cause spa to become cloudy and able to filter water properly. It can also lead to hot tub, itch rash, and equipment damage. Now, That's a fancy word for the stuff that's been around forever. It's, it's bad. You don't want it in your hot tub. It will cause, it will cause damage to you and it will cause damage to the hot tub. And it will cause it to it. It will cause it to. Eat your chlorine up like crazy. So in swimming pools, they kind of have the same thing, but you just can't, you can't purge a pool, but in, in swimming pools. And then that actually turn ends up turning into what they call a chlorine demand because there's more stuff in the water than the chlorine can actually consume. So that's what happens in a hot tub as well. Now hot tubs are just a small amount of water and you can easily drain 'em and start over. But what we were doing in the past is we were just draining them, starting over, and then we weren't cleaning out those lines. And when you clean out those lines, it is literally. It is just crazy how much, the first time I did it, it was like I had a brand new hot tub. So it was a huge deal and I was really, really happy with it. And I do highly recommend that anybody who does does try it, that you, you're gonna, you're going to think that it is, it's pretty. Pretty awesome. So then we're going to after that, so I hope I explain that if anybody has any questions about what biofilm is, let me know. But what products do you use to purge now? That's, that's a great question and there's a lot of really good products out there. My favorite and I'm really impressed with it, I really like the old version of is Hot Tub Scrub and, hang on just a second. And then he, he just came out with this new version and it's a powdered version and it does really, really well. I did. It only takes half the bottle. I probably put a little too much in, I probably put a cap full too much in, but you, it only takes half the bottle. Again, I'm gonna have a tutorial video on this probably on Sunday. But that's one of my favorites. It's, it's a peroxide base. Most of them are just a detergent base. But what I really like about that one is it's a peroxide base. It works incredibly well, and it, it foams. I, I well warn you that it foams heavily. And again, if you look at my Instagram page, there's a video of just the foam. So it, it really foams, but it's a really, really good product and it does a really good job. The one thing I would say about it that on the powder product versus the liquid product is it did, the foam would kind of stick to the sides a little bit. So I had to scrub on that a little bit, but it was just a tiny little mount. It was nothing like the product I was talking about earlier. It, but it did stick a little bit and so I had to, had to clean that up. And so you don't want to ever on any purge to drain it and walk away from it and then think you're gonna come back to it and clean it up. You definitely want to wipe it down right away. You don't have to fill the hot tub right away, but make sure that you wipe. Wipe the hot tub down as soon as you get the, the purge done. So that's my, that's my favorite product of all the purges that are out there. My second favorite W is from natural chemistry and it's called. Spa purge and it's in a white bottle with a green label. Again, links are down below in the show notes. That's a really good product, very natural product, very easy. I don't worry about spilling that on my hands or doing anything with that. That's, that's a super, super good product and I really, really like that one. One of the, so if you follow any of the Facebook forums or anything there, one that does really well and I just like the name of it is awesome. So it's a a h h sum, that's a really good product and it's kind of more of a paste. And then you just take a couple ounces of that and you put that into the hot tub. It is a little more money than some of the other ones, and I'll be honest with you I've used it a few times. It does a good job. It is a big cleanup. It takes a lot to clean it up. And they've done a phenomenal job on, on social media of just promoting that particular product and doing a really good job with it and, There's nothing wrong with it. I, I find it to be a bit more clean up than some of some of the other ones. But I have used it in the past and I've used it in situations that nothing else would work. So a few years ago there was a plumbing line issue that, that the manufacturer had, and we had to. Clean that up because we had water quality issues and we couldn't fix it, and that was the only thing that worked to clean it. And that we had like a whole string of hot tubs that were made for like six, eight months that had had to go through that process. And every other purge that we tried. And there, there's been a lot of new ones come out since that timeframe, but every other purge that we tried wouldn't work. But that was the one that would clean out the clean out the lines. And that was a situation where they took the plasticizers out of the PVC and it was just something outta everyone's control. But awesome was the product that fix that. So, and again, if you follow any, any of the Facebook groups, The, they do push that pretty hard and it, and it does really well. My Facebook book, my Facebook group clean Your Hot Tub Filter On, on Facebook. We, we don't talk about it too much cuz I have other, other brands that I talk about a little bit more. But it is something that we, we do encourage you to purge your hot tub, so that's on there as well. Another product is that clean start from Silk Balance. That's a good product as well. Again, that one's a little more clean up afterwards and. You definitely wanna check into that. And then another one that I really, really like is from Spa Guard and it's called System Flush a. Again, all the links are down below, but it's, that's a really good product as well. So any one of those four would be, I guess that's five. Any one of those five you would be really happy with and you would really enjoy and you would, you would get amazing results with it. There's just some are easier to clean up than others. I would definitely say the hot tub scrub is probably the easiest of all of them to clean up. It definitely foams probably more than any other ones, but again, it's because it's, it's a peroxide base versus a ch detergent base, and it does a really good job and I've just, I can't believe how clean my hot tub is it, but it was really bad. It needed with, with me being out as long as I was with the knee surgeries. My hot tub got abused a little bit so. Hopefully that answers a lot of questions there, so that you can, that helps with that. And then how do you know when to purge your hot tub? That's a g that's a great question. And it's something that. A lot of times, one, it's kind of an annual thing, so just kind of know that you need to do it once a year. Again, we, I had a hot tub for years, decades before we ever did it, so it wasn't something that we did all the time. And a lot of places will tell you to do it every time you drain your hot tub. Once a year is plenty. If you have a saltwater hot tub and you're only draining once a year, then you need to do it at that time. The but what you need to do is, If you, how do you know is if you're having a really hard time holding a chlorine concentration or a sanitation? If you can't hold a sanitizer, that's probably, probably a time. Another is if you're getting a greasy line in the corners or like in the filter compartment area, you'll get this greasy foamy line and you just, no matter what you do, if you wipe it up, it goes away. Sometimes people confuse metal for that if there's metal in your water, but, It just, it's just this buildup and it keeps, you know, you can run your finger through it or write your name in it, and if you have that, it's definitely time to purge your hot tub. And then otherwise, like I said, usually in the spring's, a really good time to do it, or in the fall before you're going into winter. Those are, those are the two best times to do it, but you'll, you'll kind of know. And then just make sure you pull your filters out before you put the purge in. You do not want the filters in while doing that. What are the steps to take before purging? Again, I kind of went over this a little bit, but the big thing there is use the old water, pull the filters out make sure your water level's good. It's not a bad idea to take the pillows off of the hot tub at that point, cuz you're gonna kind of get up in, in behind those pillows and that type of things. I actually took the. The diverter valves, the caps off of those. I took that off too just so I could do a real deep clean when I did that. But you wanna do that and then when you drain the hot tub, you wanna have a pump. It's just gonna make life easier. You don't necessarily have to, but a submersible pump is, is a really good hot tub accessory. It's probably the one hot tub accessory that I recommend that absolutely everybody has. And I personally, I, I just drain mine right out into the yard and I don't, do not have an award-winning backyard, but I don't, I. But my hot tub is always clean and my yard is always green, so, but the, the award-winning backyard has nothing to do with my hot tub. It is a hundred percent to do with, I don't do a lot of yard work. So that, that's, that's what works with that. But definitely want to, that's what I do. If you're not comfortable with that, just get a long enough hose and, and drain it wherever you need to. Do. Check with your city code. Don't just be dumping it into the storm sewer or something like that. I live in I have a slew out back in my yard. I wouldn't wanna drain it right into that because it, it would be hard for the wildlife and that type of thing. So kind, kind of be co conscious of your surrounding area, but you definitely want to want to yeah, you have to get rid of that. And so, again, I just drained mine right into the lawn. But that's what you need to know. Does purging help the water last? So does purging make your hot tub water last longer and your chemicals last longer? 100%. It is definitely gonna help your hot tub last longer. It's going to stretch that water out. It's gonna cut down on your chemical usage because there's not something in there consuming up the chlorine or the, the bromine or the salt or, or whatever you're using as a sanitizer. It can work on the other contaminants that are getting brought into the hot tub. So this is one of the reasons why you wanna purge and probably the main reason you wanna purge is it is gonna LA make your water last longer. So you might be able to, if you normally drink three months, you might be able to get four months, or if you go a year, you might be able to go 13 months. I wouldn't recommend going much longer than that, but it, it does help the hot, it helps the water last longer, and it also helps your filters last longer. And filters are expensive. Filters are one of the most expensive things you're gonna buy as a hot tub owner. So purging your hot tub will help the filters last longer, so that's something to consider as well. Is flushing a hot tub different than purging? So that's a question that I have heard a couple times. No, it's the same thing. It's, it, it's the exact same thing. It's just a matter, it's just a matter of which, which terminology you're using. So I've, I've seen things called Flush. I've seen things called Purge. I've, they're the same thing, just, just different, different name. So, How long does it take to purge a hot tub? This one's a, it's a bigger project. If, if you're going to purge a hot tub, you wanna plan on giving yourself a a few hours for sure. If you're gonna purge a hot tub. I actually, I use, I've never let it sit overnight, but I got called away on Saturday, but I started, I put the purge in, the purges got, I pulled the filters out, put the purge in. The purges gotta run for at least a half hour, 45 minutes. And then you're gonna have to drain. Now if you have that big submersible complex I was talking about, I drained it in about 20 minutes and then take a garden hose and rinse it out and wiped it out. So that took me, the whole project probably took me three hours just to clean it and empty it. And then of course you have to fill it back up. And that takes as long as it takes. Cause that all depends on, on your pressure. But it's an afternoon project. It's not just something that you're gonna decide you're gonna do one. One minute and, and have it done in, in no time. Flat pumps make a huge difference if you do that, but it is something to, to definitely you, it is something you definitely wanna consider is getting yourself one of those pumps, but plan on budgeting four to six hours and you can do other things like when you're filling up the hot tub, you can be wiping down the cover and, and doing other things or mowing the lawn real quick or that type of thing. Probably the one of the longest. Pieces of it. The two things that take the longest are waiting for the purge to actually work. So that 30, 45 minutes and then filling the hot tub back up, the, you're moving a lot in between. You wanna drain it, you wanna wipe it down, you want to get a shot vac and sh it ShopVac out all of the, the lines. You wanna do all that, but then you wanna fill it back up and so, I think it took me pretty close to an hour and a half to fill it back up. So, but I did go through the on the Go softener because I am a saltwater hot tub. But that's it. It is a little bit of a project. It's just not something that happens instantly. So. And then what are some common mistakes people make while purging? It's, it's pretty hard to mess up a purge. But it is doable. So probably the biggest one that people make is they don't take the filters out. They'll leave their filters in, in the hot tub itself and then run the purge. You've, you've ruined your filters at that point. And sometimes it, so much stuff is coming out of the lines that it'll actually get caught in the filters and then, You don't get the suction. So, and then it's not purging properly. You can actually do a lot of damage to the hot tub cuz the, the water can't get to the pump and then it can overheat the pump and that type of thing. So that's probably the biggest mistake people make. The other one that people make is not wiping 'em down after the purge is over. So not getting that, all that ick out of there and thinking that they're gonna come back to that a day or two later, or I've got time to do this now or like I got caught away on Saturday. And then I come back to wipe it down. If I would've wait, waited to wipe that down, that would've been a sticky, gooey mess. And I would've had to, I'd, I'd have been cussing it. So that's not something that you wanna do. You always wanna wipe it down. As soon as you can, and it's not a bad idea as it's draining to kind of wipe, wipe down the, the line as it's coming down. I, what I do is I'll take a garden hose and I'll actually hose it down as it's draining because it pumps in there and then it can just pump, pump it out, and then that seems to be the quickest, easiest way to do it. But that's, One of the biggest mistakes and then using too much product. That's probably the third biggest mistake is people will put in too much product, like this one here. It, it really does. I've got a huge hot tub and it really does only take half of the bottle if I would've used the whole thing. I used, I did use too much, but I didn't use the whole thing. And I had foam. I had a lot, a lot of foam. And if I'd have been in a house, that would've been a pretty big mess. But outside on my patio, I don't care at all. And it, it cleaned up instantly. I didn't even have to hose it down. As soon as I turned the jets off, it just like instantly went down and I. Worked really well, but it did foam up while the jets were running, and that's probably another really important thing is you wanna make sure that the jets are on, you wanna have them open, you wanna have air, you wanna have agitation, you want your water features going, you wanna make sure that your water features are open and running so you can clean out that area as well. And you really. Want that, that hot tub moving, you want a lot happening there. So make sure you do that. Make sure you don't have all the air turned off and, and that type of thing. You really want, you want agitation so that you can work that stuff out. And then again, just cleaning up afterwards, that's probably the biggest thing there. So, And then our next question is, is how do you drain the hot tub and where, so I kind of went over this a little bit, but We'll, we'll talk about it again, but you definitely a pump, like I said, a pump is one of, one of the best ways to drain this hot tub. I would get a submersible pump, and I don't have it in down there now, but I'll add it to the notes. But the one that I recommend is it's called the. Portable travel submersible pump, and I think it's actually for, for camping, but it's got a big, huge, the, the trick to that one is it's got a big, huge two inch hose. And when that two inch, two inch hose is. It moves that water out really, really fast. So that's what I'd recommend first. You can siphon it out. You can actually take I like the quick drains. The, again, those are a big inch and a half pipe. And then you put them into the hot tub and you pump 'em, and then they create a, a siphon, and then they set the water out that way. I'm a big fan of those. That's I think just because that takes me back to my Nebraska farm days when I had to do irrigation. That irrigation pipe, that's the exact same way we did that. You can just drain it with the drain if you wanna do that. That's, it's not my favorite cuz you're just using a regular garden hose at that point. And sometimes there's a lot of yuck in there and you're running that all the way through the drain and stuff. And it, it's just a slow, tedious process. But you can do it you can do a. You can create a siphon with a garden hose and what to do that, what you're gonna do is you're gonna take a garden hose, you're gonna hook it up, like you're gonna fill it. You're gonna put the hose in, and then you're gonna actually put that hose on a jet, and then you're gonna just stick that hose on. On the jet? No, I'm sorry. That's if the hose is empty. If the hose is empty, you put that hose on the jet and you'll have it laying out till the water runs at the end, and then you just drop it into the water and then it'll, that'll create a section or you can do it where you hook it up to the hose and get, get the hot tub completely full of water, and then unhook it from the hose and drop it. You just wanna make sure you don't get it higher than, than, so it gets air in it. You just drop it so that it, it creates section that way. Those are a little slower, but they do work. And again, I drain mine into the yard. If that's not something you're comfortable with, please don't, you don't have to do that. You can put it, put it wherever you want. If you're gonna put it into a, the sewage drain or the, I've seen, heard of people like pumping 'em down the toilet or putting 'em in the. Sewer or the storm drain, just talk to your city and make sure that you, you've, you know, what city codes are, cuz some, some city codes will not allow you to do that. So kind of keep that in mind as well. But you do have to get rid of it. And that's, those are the, the ways to do that. How much to purge products cost? They're kind of all over the board. The. I would say you're probably gonna pay about, in today's market, probably around $30. Some of them are kind of pricey. The awesome is one that can get up there a little bit. It's I'm gonna say I. It can get up to about$50 for like two ounces. When this isn't on sale, it's around $50. I wanna say it's on sale for like $39 right now. You can get the, like the quick drain that's Yeah, about $30. Mo most of them out there that, that you can find are, is around that $30. If you can find something for less than that, you can definitely give it a shot. There's, there's so many products out there. I, I didn't even scratch a service. There's dozens and dozens of, of products out there, but of, of the ones I've tried, those would be the ones that make made my list. I wouldn't, I've, I've tried some that, that haven't made my list. So there, there are a lot, there's a lot, a lot of purges out there, so just kind of. Kind of do that. So We are typic, we are there. Those are links are in the description on the show notes as well. But that's just a quick little seven page guide that gives you some tips and tricks on everything that you need to know about hot tubing. And I got a quick question here real quick. We'll add that. Hi Lamar, welcome and your site. Wanna know, how often do you shock your hot tub? You should shop shock, your hot tub once a week. And the reason that you shock your hot tub once a week is. The chlorine or the bromine, the, that molecule becomes a combined molecule so that molecule's bouncing around in, in the hot tub, it's, it's killing the bacteria, it's doing its thing. Well, eventually total dissolved solids and other things and contaminants get in the hot tub and they're floating around and they start. Connecting to that chlorine molecule. And when they collect to that chlorine molecule, then this becomes what you call a combined chlorine, and now it's a chloramine. And the fact that it's a chloramine, it is no longer working. So if it's a bromine one, it is working, but it's a chlorine one, this isn't working, and that's when you smell it. So if, if the hot tub is smells or gets smells like chlorine, your eyes are burning, that type of thing, then it's time to shock the hot tub. And so what you do is you shock the hot tub. You have to get to 10 part per million of. Free chlorine. If you don't get there, you're actually adding to the problem, and that breaks these two off. This gases often goes into the atmosphere, and then this chlorine molecule is working again. That was a pretty detailed answer to your question, but I hope that answers your question for you. So Anybody else have any questions real quick, but that's kinda late for me to be asking that.
